The latest major version of Microsoft Windows 10, known as Windows Update April 10, 2018, is available for download as of today (April 30), and there are many good reasons to get it now. Marquee among them are the new Timeline view mode, Focus Assist focused on productivity and greater smart connectivity at home.
But do not expect the Windows 10 April 2018 update to land in your lap through Windows Update, since the review is expected to arrive there within a week. It should be available later today on this page, than when posting links to the previous main update. Once you have it installed, these are the features to try first.
Timeline
If you have trouble finding the document you were previously editing, or the news story you were reading, the newest feature in Windows 10 is made to improve your workflow. The new Timeline view allows users to go back in time, up to 30 days in the past, to pick up that task or previous story.
This feature is also a great help for those Windows users who extend their work through Android and iOS smartphones and tablets (that is, all but a dozen Windows Phone users), since the Edge browser and The Android initiator also allow you to synchronize the activity of those devices.
It's all similar to the Continuity feature on Macs, iPhones and iPads. In a nutshell, it's better in Windows, since it can do more than just transfer your immediate content, but go back a few weeks too.
Focus Assist
There are a lot of distractions, and the simple one-called Focus Assist seems to be a great tool to stay productive on the rest of your computer. Alternate by clicking on its Quick Action button in the Action Center, Focus Assist hides system notifications, and while it looks a lot like the old Windows 10 Quiet Hours, it is much more capable.
First, you can schedule times when you do not want to see distracting notifications in Windows, but now you can set up a list of specific types of notifications that can not be lost. That means you can block most things that are minor, but still see calls or emails from important people in your life, for example, your boss or your family members.
You can also make a white list of specific applications that are so important that you always need to see your notifications. A brief summary of what you have lost will appear when the Focus Assistance mode ends.
Welcome to the smart home, Cortana
Support for ecobee smart home devices, Honeywell and Nest means that the Windows 10 digital assistant Cortana is your new digital butler. An example listed on the Microsoft site shows that you can set up smart home thermostats at specific temperatures, simply by asking Cortana: "Hey, Cortana, set the living room thermostat to 72 degrees."
I hope this is just the beginning, since Microsoft probably wants Cortana not to be completely overtaken by Alexa, who lands on selected PCs.
More control on the edge
Just as Focus Assist gives you more control over what you're doing, the latest version of Edge adds features that will make you feel more controlled in your Internet browsing. Main among them are the mutable eyelashes, something that should have been on Edge since day 1, but it's still a feature that we're happy to see.
This version of Edge also wants to provide more space to focus on what you are seeing. Not only can you bring eBooks, PDFs and web pages configured to the Reading View in a full screen mode, but a new "no mess" printing option will make your impressions much clearer.
Dictation-based typing
I have noticed that it may be faster to say something out loud than to write it, and that is why the improved Windows 10 Dictation is worth mentioning here. By pressing Windows + H, you can now take a note or simply say words in an existing document, as long as the cursor is already there.
